Charleston Family Photography

As your family grows and develops, it is important to be able to look back at who you all were and how far you’ve come. Every moment with your loved ones is precious. Each stage passes by so quickly that often you don’t notice each important milestone until it’s in the past. Capturing these moments is something you and your children will treasure for a lifetime. It is important to take the utmost care to select a family portrait photographer who has experience in capturing moments that will speak for generations.

But, let us guess: your family is loud, messy, silly… No problem! We want to celebrate that! Family is one of the things Valerie and Co. Photographers values the most. Your family portraits should capture the love, creativity, and uniqueness of your family. With this in mind, we keep our family sessions relaxed and fun. We would much rather goof off behind the camera to make your kids give us a giggle rather than say, “say cheese!” – expressions are much more genuine that way! During our family sessions, we play around, we make silly faces, we laugh, and we make memories.

DRESSING FOR THE OCCASION – WHAT TO WEAR?

I know that as a woman, it’s difficult to choose what to wear for ourselves some days, let alone choosing and coordinating outfits for the whole family! Lady Gaga may be able to get away with wearing a dress made out of meat, but for your family, your favorite clothes are probably a better option, haha. Choosing the right outfits can make all the difference when it comes to capturing family photographs that will stand the test of time. So, how do you choose? Don’t worry; I’ve gathered some tricks and advice on how to make your wardrobe work for you during your session.

GROOMING: The family

Make sure that all fingernails and toenails are clean and mindfully manicured (ladies and gents). Chipped red fingernail polish can be a huge detractor from an otherwise lovely image. Try to get your haircuts and coloring done at least a week prior to your photo session. The day of your shoot will be so much nicer if you don’t have hair disasters to deal with!

Proper Undergarments: It all starts with foundations ladies. Proper support for your “assets” will make you feel more confident in your photos! Try on your selected outfit before the shoot and check your beautiful self out in the mirror to ensure that straps and panty lines aren’t visible.

MAKE-UP: I’m talking to you, ladies.

Ladies, for your family portrait sessions, make-up should be just the slightest bit heavier than you would wear on a normal day. (The camera really does “take it off”!) Even if you don’t normally wear make-up, a little bit can make a huge difference in your photographs. If you don’t feel comfortable doing your own make-up, you can get a quick make-over at a department store counter or Ulta. We also have a few makeup artists on call for our studio that do amazing work, and we’re happy to schedule their services for you for a small fee!

COLORs: This is important stuff.

If you need some direction for outfit color-coordination ideas, choose a color scheme for your family that will go well with your home décor. These days, Pinterest has become an invaluable source for clothing ideas for family portrait sessions! Do you have an amazing brown and green scarf? Does your daughter wear her favorite pink polka-dotted rain boots as often as she can? Start there! Most importantly, wear something that you feel comfortable and confident in. Wear clothing that flatters your body. (Confidence matters!) Short sleeves and long sleeves look great, though be leery of sleeveless and cap sleeves. (However, if you have it, and love how you look in it, go for it!)

Location, Location, Location: This can make the shoot.

Make sure that your clothing selections are location appropriate. A windy day at the beach? Beware of wearing large, flowy skirts that could blow up too high for modesty. (No “wardrobe malfunctions” needed, haha!)

A hot summer day at the park? Avoid formal wear and clothing that gets dark fast with sweaty spots.
Downtown Charleston? In order to best show off the colors and textures of our beautiful city, we suggest avoiding loud prints, patterns, plaids and polka-dots that are going to steal the focus away from your beautiful smiles. Also for downtown sessions, ladies, if you love your high heels, you might also want to bring flip flops to walk from spot to spot so your feet don’t get sore.

Most importantly, remember that your session is about you and your family. You need to be relaxed, happy and comfortable in whatever you choose to wear. Photographs with your family are not about being formal and perfect; they are about capturing memories, moments and experiences that celebrate what is special about your family. So relax, be yourself, and let’s have fun. You will look amazing!
