"My now fiance Katie is originally from upstate New York, but grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and I was born and raised in the Boston, MA area. She and I met our Sophomore year in college at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina. We had been dating for 7 years and I think we were both ready for the next step in our relationship! I chose to have an engagement ring custom designed with a great local jeweler in North Carolina and I had to sneak onto Katie’s Pinterest for weeks. The jeweler helped me get exactly what I wanted to surprise her!
Katie and I have always called Charleston 'our place.' We've come down every year since college to get away and I planned the surprise proposal for Charleston. Katie is a fourth-grade teacher and for one of her breaks we had planned a long weekend in the city. I had been playing the trip down for weeks trying not to show too much excitement to make sure Katie didn’t suspect anything, but I had been working with a lot of great people to pull off the perfect proposal.
We stayed right in the middle of town and after a great day exploring the city, we decided to take a walk through the Waterfront Park before grabbing drinks before dinner. As we approached the Pineapple Fountain (a beautiful location Valerie & Co. Photographers studio helped me pick out – and now our favorite spot in Charleston), I spotted Valerie 'taking pictures' of a couple in front of the fountain. Katie and I walked right up to the front of the fountain which is where I proposed and luckily, she said yes!
We then got a ton of great pictures throughout Charleston with Val and had a blast calling our friends and family that night to share the great news. I had also asked Katie’s parents to drive up from Jacksonville to surprise her and celebrate with us for the day. The last surprise was all of our friends waiting for us back in North Carolina to celebrate when we got home on Sunday. It was the perfect weekend!"
